Joseph E. Lockridge Scholarship Foundation Inc.
This scholarship was established in 1969 as a tribute to the memory of a “man who dared to pioneer as a political leader for the people of color”. Joseph Edwin Lockridge was born on July 15, 1932 in Waco, TX. He moved to Dallas in 1937. He graduated from Lincoln High School, class of 1949. He received his B.S. degree from Southern University, Baton Rouge, LA in 1954 and his law degree from Howard University School of Law, Washington, D.C. in 1960.
As a youth he realized that if blacks and poor people were to ever enjoy the fruits of this great nation, then they needed a “voice” to represent them at all levels of government to effectuate social change
Elected to the Texas State House of Representatives in 1966 from District 33, Place 5, Joseph was the first Black state representative from Dallas County since the days of Reconstruction. He was an active member of the Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church of which his father was pastor for 18 years. His position of public service came to an abrupt end in May 1968 when he was killed in a plane crash. Joseph still lives in the hearts and of his church family and his community.
